Most people assume that once a doctor writes a prescription, the hard part is done. But how you take a medication matters just as much as which medication you take. Used correctly, medicines are remarkably effective. Used carelessly, even the most straightforward drug can cause problems.
The single most important rule is to follow the instructions exactly, not approximately. Dosage instructions are calculated based on your specific weight, age, kidney function, and medical history. Halving a dose because you feel fine, or doubling one because you want faster results, disrupts that calculation. If the instructions do not make sense to you, ask your pharmacist before you start, not after something goes wrong.
Timing matters more than most patients realise. Medications that need to be taken twice daily are usually timed twelve hours apart to keep a stable level in your bloodstream. Taking both doses in the morning because it is more convenient defeats the purpose entirely.
Never mix medications without checking first. This includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and supplements, not just prescription medicines. St. John's Wort, for example, interferes with antidepressants, contraceptives, and HIV medications. Your pharmacist can run an interaction check in minutes.
Store your medications properly. Heat and humidity degrade many drugs faster than most people realise. Keep them away from your bathroom cabinet and the top of your kitchen counter. If a medication needs refrigeration, the label will say so.
Finally, do not assume silence means safety. If you are experiencing something unusual after starting a new medication, such as unusual fatigue, stomach upset, or dizziness, mention it to your pharmacist. Side effects are often manageable if caught early.
